W-Tennis Doubles Team Reaches Final of Kickoff Cls

The University of Florida women's tennis doubles team of Jennifer Magley and Zerene Reyes defeated Stanford's Alice Barnes and Amber Liu 8-2 to advance to the final of the Collegiate Kickoff Classic at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the campus of UNLV. The unranked Gator duo faces Tennessee's 22nd-ranked Vilmarie Castellvi and Melissa Schaub in the championship match on Sunday morning.

"This was a great win for Zerene and Jennifer," UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "We struggled today on the singles courts, but we were able to rebound and focus on this doubles match and get the job done. In singles, we lacked confidence in the first set and did not do a good job of disguising that and competing through it. We made up for that on the doubles court and I'm pleased that we regrouped and fought."

Reyes, ranked 26th in the country, lost to Stanford's 13th-ranked Alice Barnes 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinal round of the main draw.

Magley and fellow freshman Boglarka Berecz lost their respective Round of the 16 Consolation quarterfinal singles matches. Magley fell to Notre Dame's Caylan Leslie 1-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-5), with the deciding set played as a 'super set,' while Boglarka lost her match to UNLV's Tracie Chong 6-3, 6- 0.

The three-day tournament features players from 2002 NCAA champion and preseason top-ranked Stanford, No. 2 Florida, No. 3 Georgia, No. 5 North Carolina, No. 11 Tennessee, No. 17 UNLV and No. 22 Notre Dame.
