Women’s Tennis Shuts Out South Alabama

The second-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team held off 27th-ranked South Alabama in the doubles matches and never looked back as the Gators moved to 2-0 on the year with a 7-0 victory over the Jaguars on Sunday. With the win, UF began the season with back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1991.
"South Alabama was even better than I thought they would be," said UF head coach Roland Thornqvist. "They are definitely a good tennis team that will beat a lot of teams this season. I have to give credit to our No. 3 doubles. They were down and out and in a tough spot, but kept their cool. They learned to keep their poise when it would have been easy to panic. In the singles we came out smoking in some spots, but getting the doubles point helped out with that."
After Florida's Alexis Gordon and Julia Scaringe, ranked seventh nationally, dropped their doubles match to Viktoria Stoklasova and Katarina Palenikova (8-2) the Gators were in need of a victory at No. 3 in order to get the doubles point. Freshman Jennifer Magley and sophomore Zerene Reyes faced a 7-5 deficit before coming back for 9-7 win.
Each of the Gators won their singles draw in straight sets for the second straight match. Twenty-second ranked Julie Rotondi guaranteed the Florida win with her 6-0, 7-5 victory over Marlieke Jager at the No. 3 position.
The Gators return to action on Saturday, Feb. 1 as they host Florida International. Action is set to begin at 1 p.m. at the Ring Tennis Complex
