Women's Tennis Shuts Out Ole Miss In SEC Opener
Saturday, March 1, 2003 | Women's Tennis
The top-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team began Southeastern Conference play in fine fashion on Friday evening as they defeated 39th-ranked Ole Miss, 6-0, at the Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville. With the win, the Gators improved to 9-1 on the season and is 1-0 in SEC play while the Rebels fell to 3-6 on the year and 0-1 in league play.
"Overall, I'm tremendously pleased that it was pretty much a flawless match," said UF head coach Roland Thornqvist. "Unfortunately, we were not able to play doubles because that is what we needed to work on most. The team is excited to start the SEC season. Our first goal is to win the conference championship. We are eager to roll along through the matches. Each and every match we have to get better though."
Due to possible weather delays with showers expected throughout the area in the evening hours, the match was started fifteen minutes earlier and began with singles play instead of doubles. At the completion of singles competition, and with the Gators owning a 6-0 advantage with straight set wins at every positions the two programs opted not to continue with doubles matches.
The Gators had no trouble on nearly every court with positions two through six finishing their matches in just over an hour. However, UF did have trouble on court one where Florida's 17th-ranked Lindsay Dawaf battled 24th-ranked Mira Radu before coming away with a 7-5, 6-1 victory in a match that lasted nearly an hour and 50 minutes. Jennifer Magley (81) clinched the dual for the Gators on six with her 6-1, 6-0 victory over Audra Adams. UF's 25th-ranked Julia Scaringe put Florida in the position to win the match with her 6-0, 6-2 win on court two. Scaringe kept her individual dual match record spotless as she leads the team with a 10-0 mark.
Florida will return to the court and stay inside SEC play as it hosts Mississippi State on Sunday, March 2. The match will be held at the Ring Tennis Complex and will begin at 1 p.m.
