Stanford Defeats Georgia 4-0 in NCAA Quarterfinal
Friday, May 16, 2003 | Women's Tennis
Top-seeded and two-time defending NCAA champion Stanford shutout eighth-seeded Georgia 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships. The Cardinal (24-1) advances to their 18th consecutive NCAA semifinal match, where they play California at 2 p.m. at the Ring Tennis Complex.
Stanford has defeated Georgia in the two team's four NCAA Quarterfinal meetings and SU leads UGA 8-2 all-time in NCAA contests. The Lady Bulldogs(19-5) were making their sixth consecutive NCAA Quarterfinal appearance.
After winning the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and 3 positions, Stanford stormed out into early leads on the singles courts. Georgia regrouped and began to battle back, but only after the Cardinal had won the first set on five of the six courts. The Lady Bulldog's Agata Cioroch, ranked third in the country, won the first set tiebreaker 7-3 over fourth-ranked Amber Liu. The second set was tied 2-all when play was halted.
Stanford completed Friday's sweep with singles victories from Erin Burdette, Alice Barnes and Emilia Anderson. The Cardinal are the only team remaining in the NCAA field that has yet to lose a match during the Championships.
