Florida Sweeps SEC All-Sports Titles
Tuesday, May 20, 2003 | General
For an unprecedented seventh time, the University of Florida completed a sweep of all three Southeastern Conference All-Sports titles, capturing the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group SEC All-Sports title as well as finishing first in this year's men's and women's all-sports competition. Prior to 1992, no school in SEC history had ever won both the men's and women's all-sports titles in the same academic year. Florida became the first to win all three in 1992 and has repeated the feat in 1993, 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2002.
Overall, Florida won its 12th consecutive Southeastern Conference All-Sports Trophy and has now won all three titles in three of the last four years. The Florida women have won eight of the last nine titles and finished in the top two in 19 of the 20 years of the competition, while the UF men's program has placed in the top three in each of the last 13 years.
The New York Times Regional Newspaper Group, which includes 14 newspapers throughout the Southeastern United States, awards trophies to the league school which captures each of those three all-sports titles. A first-place SEC finish is worth 12 points, second is given 11 points, and so on. A school's point total is divided by the number of sports it fields to arrive at the average. The New York Times Regional Newspaper Group took over coordination of the SEC All-Sports rankings in 1994-95. Prior to that, the league tabulated the SEC All-Sports totals.
Florida won five SEC Championships in 2002-03 to raise its total to 58 since the 1992-93 academic year, the most by any conference school during the 11-year span. The Gators won SEC titles in volleyball, women's track and field, both men's and women's tennis and in men's golf.
Florida finished with 156 total points this year in its 16 sports to win the overall all-sports title with an average of 9.75 points. Auburn was second with an average of 8.25 (132 points in 16 sports).
The Florida's men's program finished first, totaling 70 points for an average of 10.00 points in its seven sports. Auburn placed second with an average of 8.93 (62.50 points in seven sports). It was the second highest average ever by a men's member institution and only the second time a men's program finished with a 10.00 or better average, as the 2001-02 Gator men's programs combined for an average of 10.07.
The Florida women also finished first with an average of 9.56 points (86 points in nine sports). Tennessee finished second with an average of 8.75 (70 points in eight sports).
UF is hopeful of finishing among the nation's top 10 most successful overall athletic programs for the 20th straight year when final national all-sports rankings are released in June. Florida and UCLA are the only two schools in the country to finish among the nation's top 10 overall most successful athletic programs each year since 1983.
