The University of Florida has placed two student-athletes on the Verizon Academic All-District III Cross Country/Track and Field teams. Sophomore Cory Presnick appears on the Verizon District III Academic All-America first team, while fellow sophomore Kim Barrett appears on the Verizon District III second team. Presnick will now advance to the national ballot, which will be announced on June 17.
Presnick, who owns a 3.92 GPA in accounting, competed in all six cross country meets in 2002 and was consistently one of the top finishers for the Gators in each event. He achieved his career-best time of 25:29.9 in the 8K run at the Pre-NCAA Invitational and 32:48.65 in the 10K run at the South Regionals, where he was the top Gator finisher. Presnick was recently named to the 2002 U.S. Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team and was also named to the 2003 Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll.
Barrett, who owns a 3.34 GPA in sociology, earned two All-America honors during the 2003 indoor season in the shot put and the weight throw. She recorded a top-five finish in 14 of 15 events during the indoor season. Barrett finished third in both the shot put and weight throw at the SEC Indoor Championships and finished fifth in the same events at the NCAA Indoor Championships. She finished fourth in the hammer throw and fifth in the shot put at the SEC Outdoor Championships, helping lead Florida to its first SEC outdoor title since 1998. During the outdoor season, she has improved her personal best in the hammer throw by nearly nine feet, and her marks on Florida's all-time top 10 list in the indoor and outdoor shot put, weight throw and hammer throw events all came from 2003 meets. This season, Barrett was also named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
