The third-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team capped its four-match road trip Sunday afternoon with a 5-2 victory over 28th-ranked Alabama.
The win was the Gator's 30th consecutive win dating back to last year. UF improved to 13-0 overall and 6-0 in the Southeastern Conference.
"We really did a good job in a very difficult situation," UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "It was extremely windy and they had a large crowd there, but I thought we handled the elements well."
UF entered the match having posted a 62-2 singles record in dual match play, but the Crimson Tide doubled the number of losses by winning at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
At the No. 1 spot, UF's Alexis Gordon had her 11-match win streak halted by 50th-ranked Robin Stephenson 6-4, 7-6 (11). Stephenson, a sophomore, has beaten the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked singles players in collegiate tennis and has won her last six singles matches.
Jennifer Magley also saw her 11-match winning streak end on Sunday, dropping a tough 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 decision to Ashley Bentley.
The difference in the match was the Gator's depth, riding singles victories from Zerene Reyes, Boglarka Berecz, Lindsay Dawaf and Nina Suvak after winning the doubles point by taking the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
Florida next prepares for an important SEC showdown on Friday, when the Gators entertain No. 2-ranked Georgia at the Ring Tennis Complex.
