Ponteen, Cathey Earn SEC Honors

University of Florida freshman Tiandra Ponteen was named the Southeastern Conference's Female Freshman Runner of the Year and Mason Cathey was named to the SEC Track & Field Good Works Team.
Ponteen, who recently broke the school record in the 400m at a meet in Bogota, Colombia, with a time of 51.00, earned three All-America honors as a freshman. She finished fifth in the 400m at the NCAA Outdoor Championships after taking second in the 400m at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Ponteen has also already made the 2004 Olympic team for St. Kitts and will compete in Athens.
A senior Exercise and Sports Science Major, Cathey has helped to teach track to children at High Springs Elementary. She has taken time to help elementary children during various after school programs at local schools. Cathey also has volunteered to collect canned foods for the UAA's Harvest Drive. The Jacksonville, Florida native was the recipient of the SEC Community Service scholarship, an award bestowed on one female athlete during the year.
