University of Florida men's track and field coach Mike Holloway will serve as the head coach of the U.S. team in addition to guiding four UF student-athletes at the 2004 North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association Championships which begin Friday, July 30.
The event, which will feature numerous 2004 Olympians in the field of 300 athletes from nearly 30 countries, lasts from Friday, July 30-Sunday, Aug. 1 and will be held at Université de Sherbrooke Stadium.
Four current Florida athletes will compete at the event: Kyle Farmer (200m), 2004 Olympian Tiandra Ponteen (400m), Josh Walker (110m hurdles) and Steve Zieminski (3000m steeplechase).
"I think it's a great opportunity for myself and the University of Florida student-athletes," Holloway said. "It's a life-long goal of athletes to represent their country at an international event. Having four athletes involved also serves as an example of the direction the programs at Florida are headed."
Farmer, who competed in the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials, is a seven-time All-American who ran on the winning 4x100m relay at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Championships and is ranked among the top 30 200m sprinters in the world. The 200m is scheduled for Saturday.
Ponteen, who will compete in the 400m for St. Kitts at the 2004 Olympics, recently broke the 12-year old school record in the same event by running 51.00 at a meet in Bogota, Colombia. The 2004 SEC Indoor and Outdoor Freshman Runner of the Year currently is ranked among the top 30 in the world in the 400m. The event will be held on Sunday.
The 2004 NCAA Outdoor champion in the 110m hurdles, Walker will compete in the same event at the NACAC Championships. The four-time All-American competed in the U.S. Trials this year and is ranked among the top 15 in the world in the 110m hurdles, which will be contested Saturday.
Zieminski is a two-time All-American and two-time SEC champion who will run in the 3000m steeplechase on Friday. Zieminski is ranked fourth all-time in UF history in the event.
