Riviera All-American Day 1of4
W-Tennis Has Two Advance in Riviera All-American Singles Championships
Friday, October 7, 2005 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida's Boglarka Berecz and Diana Srebrovic won their respective opening round singles matches the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships Thursday afternoon. However, top-ranked and No. 1-seeded Jennifer Magley lost her season debut, while two Gator doubles teams were eliminated from the main draw with losses.
Srebrovic won her fourth straight set match in three days, downing California's 12th-ranked Zsuzzana Fodor 6-4, 6-1 in the 32-player main draw. Berecz continued to battle and advanced with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over BYU's Lauren Jones. Both played their way into the main draw after winning three rounds of qualifying.
“One thing I wanted them to focus on during their matches was to handle mistakes and they did a great job with it,” UF associate head coach Dave Balogh said. “Diana was in a tight match in the first set but broke it open in the second. 'B' still isn't playing great tennis, but she's playing smart tennis. She had two match points at 5-4 in the second, but didn't close it out. However, she kept her composure and was able to get the win later in the set. I like the way she and Diana are competing.”
Berecz plays California's second-ranked Susie Babos in the second round Friday afternoon, while Srebrovic meets Stanford's No. 8-seeded Alice Barnes.
Magley didn't have the advantage of playing any matches prior to the main draw and dropped a 6-2, 6-2 first round decision to Stanford's Anne Yelsey. The Gator senior looks to rebound on Friday when she begins play in the consolation draw.
UF didn't fair any better in doubles action, with both Gator tandems dropping respective 9-7 matches in the first round.
“Overall, we didn't play that well but we didn't spend a lot of time working on doubles,” Balogh said. “But I was extremely pleased with we competed.”
