Riviera All-American Day 4of4
W-Tennis: Magley Falls in Consolation Singles Final at Riviera/ITA All-American
Sunday, October 9, 2005 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida's Jennifer Magley (Bradenton, Fla.) fell just short of capturing her second consecutive consolation singles title at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, losing in the final round Sunday afternoon to UNLV's Elena Gantcheva 6-0, 7-5.
Top-ranked Magley was one of six Gators who competed at the Riviera Tennis Club this week at the first collegiate Grand Slam event of the season.
“Overall, I feel good about our singles performance,” UF associate head coach Dave Balogh said. “I liked the way we competed and our fitness level is solid. Doubles is something we really have to work on this week and continue to do so throughout the fall. We are mediocre at best in doubles and that really needs to improve.”
In action late Saturday, Magley teamed with Gator sophomore Diana Srebrovic in the consolation doubles draw and defeated VCU's fourth-ranked Olga Borisova and Marianna Yuferova 8-4 in the semifinals but lost to USF's Gabrielle Duch and Neyssa Etienne 9-8 (3) in the championship match.
The Gators next compete at the ITA South Regional Championships beginning Thursday in Athens, Ga., at the Dan Magill Tennis Center. Magley and Srebrovic join Whitney Benik and Boglarka Berecz in the regional event, trying to earn a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championships, the second of three national championship events played on the collegiate circuit. The two singles finalists and the doubles champion advance to the main event held November 3-6 in Columbus, Ohio.
