Herring and Hand Honored By Southeastern Conference
Gainesville, Fla. - University of Florida senior strong safety Jarvis Herring (Live Oak, Fla.) and senior offensive lineman Randy Hand (Ft. Myers, Fla.) were each honored by the Southeastern Conference Monday for his role in Florida's 34-7 victory over No. 23 Florida State in "The Swamp" Saturday. Herring was named the Defensive Player of the Week, while Hand was honored as the Offensive Lineman of the Week.
Herring led the Gators with nine tackles against the Seminoles, including two for a loss, as well as an interception which he returned for 26 yards. With his effort, Herring increased his tackle total for the season to 56, which is fourth best on the team. Herring's interception in the third quarter was his second of the season and the sixth of his career (two of which have come against FSU in the red zone). His interception last Saturday came at the UF one-yard line when Florida State was threatening to cut into a 17-0 deficit. Herring also forced the second fumble of his career, which was recovered by the Florida defense and led to a touchdown. His effort helped the Gator defense hold FSU to its lowest point total of the season and the team's lowest output since 2002 at North Carolina State.
Hand graded out at 90 percent with three knockdowns. He anchored an offensive unit that scored 34 points against an FSU defense that ranked 31st nationally in allowing 20.4 point per game. Hand also helped limit the Seminoles to just two sacks after they entered the contest with an ACC best 33 sacks on the season, which ranked eighth nationally.
Florida Linebacker Demps Undergoes Surgery
Gainesville, Fla. - University of Florida linebacker Jon Demps underwent surgery at the Florida Surgical Center Monday morning.
The surgery, performed by team physician Dr. Pete Indelicato, repaired Demps' anterior cruciate ligament and cartilage in his left knee. Demps is expected to miss spring practice and return to action in six to eight months.
Demps, a 6-4, 219-pound freshman from Pensacola, Fla., has seen action in four games for the Gators this season. He has record six tackles this season, including a career-high four at Kentucky.
