Srebrovic Reaches Final of W-Tennis National Indoor Championships; Frangulyan also Plays for a Title
Saturday, November 5, 2005 | Women's Tennis
University of Florida sophomore Diana Srebrovic upset Stanford's No. 4-seeded Alice Barnes 7-5, 6-1 to advance to the finals of the women's tennis ITA National Indoor Championships. Srebrovic, ranked No. 34 in the country, plays Stanford's 12th-ranked Theresa Logar for the collegiate Grand Slam title on Sunday morning at The Racquet Club of Columbus in Ohio.
At the SEC Coaches Fall Classic, sophomore Lolita Frangulyan moved into the finals of the B Division singles draw after netting a pair of victories at the Peachtree Tennis Center. UF's Whitney Benik and Nina Suvak lost their respective semifinal matches in the A Division draw.
The win for Srebrovic was especially impressive considering the Gator sophomore lost to Barnes 6-3, 6-4 four weeks ago in the second round of the Riviera All-American Championships.
“When (Diana and Barnes) played last time, a few of Diana's weaknesses were exposed,” UF associate head coach Dave Balogh said. “But to her credit, she came back from that tournament was worked on those things in practice. She was tested here today with the low ball and showed how much she improved. Diana's serve was big, the best it has been this tournament. What I really like is that she has this look in her eyes that she's not finished yet. This was a big win for her today, but she's focused on winning one more on Sunday in the final.”
In Peachtree City, Ga., Frangulyan defeated Georgia's Evgenia Subbotina 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinal round before outlasting Vanderbilt's Caroline Ferrell 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 in the semifinals. The Gator sophomore plays Vanderbilt's Courtney Ulery for the B Division title on Sunday morning.
“This is a really good opportunity for Lolita,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “You can't practice the emotions and actual focus of playing for a title and she has a chance on Sunday. Whitney and Nina both had excellent chances to win in the semifinals, but just couldn't get it done. I do like how they are playing, though.”
Benik upset Arkansas' No. 2-seeded Vlatka Jovanovic 6-2, 6-1 in the morning's quarterfinal bout before falling to South Carolina's Gira Schofeld 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. Suvak began the day with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Alabama's Mari Muller, but dropped a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 decision to USC's Natasa Vuckovic.
Since each competitor is garunteed to play four matches at the event, Benik and Suvak will return to the courts on Sunday to play singles and doubles matches, joining Frangulyan who will be playing in the final. Action continues Sunday morning at the Peachtree City Tennis Center.
