Gators Post Wins, Regional Marks On 2nd Day At Coca-Cola Florida Relays

Senior Carling Cookerly (Sarasota, Fla.), juniors Daniel Parker (Orlando, Fla.) and Cory Presnick (Inverness, Fla.) and freshman Henok Lechebo (Toronto, Ontario) each posted event wins, while Rachel Longfors (Erhard, Minn.) posted an NCAA Regional Qualifying time in leading a strong group of University of Florida athletes on the second day of competition at the 62nd annual Coca-Cola Florida Relays presented by GRU on Thursday at James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track.
Carling and Presnick took first in the 10,000m, while Parker won the 3,000m steeplechase and Lechebo added a win in the 3,000m. Parker and Longfors each earned trips to the NCAA regional meet by posting qualifying scores with Longhors adding her mark in the hammer throw.
The meet was the first of the season for both the Florida men and women's teams. The men kicked off the 2005 outdoor season with three wins on the day as the Gators embark on their quest for the program's first national title.
"Daniel, Cory and Henok each had good days for us," Florida men's coach Mike Holloway said. "Daniel getting a regional qualifying time in the steeplechase was big and we hope that it gives us some momentum going into the final two days of Florida Relays."
The women had one regional qualifying time and one event win as the Gators are coming off a second-place showing at the 2005 NCAA Indoor Championships.
"It was a good start today," Florida women's head coach Tom Jones said. "Rachel had a big PR, she is a big-time athlete for us. Carling ran a nice race, but she'll run two or three more times this season and she will improve on that."
Parker will compete at the NCAA Regionals after posting a qualifying time of 9:06.51 to win the 3,000m steeplechase by nearly 10 seconds. Junior teammate Adam Sisler (Odessa, Fla.) finished in the top five for the Gators as he took fifth in 9:30.30.
Longfors returns to the outdoor season after a redshirt season a year ago. She was the second-highest collegiate finisher in the event, while first place went to American record holder and former Gator Erin Gilreath with a throw of 66.30m/217-06.
Presnick won the 10,000m for the second straight year as he led for the bulk of the race before winning in 31:20.04. Senior Alex Phipps (Gainesville, Fla.) came in second in 31:42.48.
Cookerly added the first Florida individual victory of the season winning the 10,000-meter in a time of 37:25.15 while freshman Lindsay Sundell (Salonga, N.Y.) also earned a top-five finish finishing third in the 3,000m steeplechase in a time of 11:09.17.
Lechebo captured first in the 5,000m as he beat the field by more than 15 seconds in leading most of the race to win in 14:48.24. The Gators posted three of the top four finishes as senior Brent Schneider (Pensacola, Fla.) took third in 15:08.29 and freshman Ryder Leary (Yulee, Fla.) came in fourth in 15:09.82.
Junior Shane Stroup (Highland, Md.) barely missed an NCAA regional qualifying time as he finished second to former teammate Moise Joseph in the 1,500m with a time of 3:48.88 as Joseph won in 3:47.29.
Freshman Kurt Lee (Spring Hill, Fla.) finished second in the decathlon with 6,013 points after entering the day in fifth place in the event. He took first in the pole vault with a mark of 4.66m/15-3.50 to earn 807 points and was second in the 1,500m with a time of 4:39.71 to pick up 682 points.
Kenia Sinclair posted one of the best performances of the evening as the former Seton Hall runner set a Percy Beard track and Florida Relays record by clocking 4:08.65 in the 1,500m.
Action at the Florida Relays continues Friday with the men's discus set for a 9 a.m. start. Running events begin at 11 a.m. with the women's collegiate 400m. Live results of the meet can be found at www.GatorZone.com
