The seventh-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team closed out its regular season Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 victory over No. 23 South Carolina at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.
"This was a good match. We are playing disciplined tennis right now and that's good to see," UF associate head coach Dave Balogh said. "When we are in position to finish off points, we are finishing off points. When we are in position to finish off games, we are finishing off games. That's a result of discipline and as coaches we're pleased with that."
Sunday was the ninth consecutive victory for the Gators, who next travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the Southeastern Conference Tournament. UF (15-2, 9-2 SEC) earned the No. 3 seed and a first-round bye in the four-day event that begins Thursday at the Alabama Varsity Courts. The Gators are the three-time defending SEC Tournament champions.
"We had a tough stretch five weeks ago, but that's in the past," Balogh said. "We're a different team now and we're looking forward to the SEC Tournament next week. We have the potential to see some teams that we would like to play again."
Florida's depth proved too much for South Carolina (13-7, 6-5 SEC), as the Gators secured the victory with singles wins on courts Nos. 4, 5 and 6 after capturing the doubles point. UF won the first set on all six singles courts when the dual match was secured and play was abandoned.
Completing their singles matches Sunday were Boglarka Berecz, Whitney Benik and Alex Liles. Jennifer Magley, Zerene Reyes and Nina Suvak won the first set of their respective singles matches when play was halted.
There only were two breaks of serve during the first set on court No. 6, and freshman Liles was the benefactor of both as she took the opening frame en route to the convincing 6-2, 6-0 win over Megan McGavock in one hour and six minutes to give UF a 2-0 lead.
Benik then followed six minutes later with a 6-3, 6-2 win versus Miranda Gutierrez on No. 4. The Gator rookie took an early lead in the match after breaking Gutierrez to begin the match. Benik rode that break until losing her serve in the sixth game. But Benik broke right back and earned another in the ninth game to take the first set. Gutierrez began the second by breaking Benik, but the Gator broke right back and then held a love to keep the set on-serve. Benik broke again in the sixth game and then closed out the match with another.
Berecz provided the clinching dual match point with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Madga Wojdylo. Berecz cruised in the first set, needing just 28 minutes to take the lead. Wojdylo then regrouped and jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second before Berecz broke in the third game and held to get the set back on serve. She broke Wojdylo again in the fifth game, but Berecz lost the advantage in the eighth game by losing her serve. However, the Gator junior battled back and took the next two games to clinch the victory.
The Gators won the doubles point, taking victories on courts No. 1 and 3, while play on court No. 2 was abandoned with UF holding a 7-3 lead since the doubles point had been decided.
Jennifer Magley and Zerene Reyes teamed for the first win of the dual match, defeating he Gamecock pair of Danielle Wiggins and Miranda Gutierrez 8-2 in 41 minutes. It appeared as though UF's No. 2 tandem of Whitney Benik and Alex Liles would provide the clinching doubles point, but several long rallies and duces allowed the match on court No. 3 to secure the point. UF's No. 3 duo of Boglarka Berecz and Nina Suvak broke open a tight match that was on-serve entering the seventh game versus Fallon Koon and Laura Ganzer. That's when the Gators broke through and then held, earning another break in the 11th game before Suvak served out for the win.
