Lowe & Santos Honored as Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholars
Thursday, April 28, 2005 | Women's Basketball
Sarah Lowe and Danielle Santos were two of 12 University of Florida student-athletes honored as Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholars as announced by Black Issues In Higher Education.
Lowe, who also was named ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District 3 Second Team, was a first team honoree for the Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholars women's basketball squad. Santos was an Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholars second team honoree.
Ten Florida women student-athletes were honored, which was the second-most of any school in the nation. More than 100 universities and colleges had athletes honored. In addition, Florida tied for the most honorees by any Southeastern Conference school with two men's award winners.
The Gator women's basketball team, softball team, track and field team and tennis team each had two award winners, while the men's golf and tennis teams and the women's golf and volleyball teams each had one winner.
Black Issues In Higher Education established the Sports Scholars Awards to honor undergraduate students of color who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination. To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2; and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
