University of Florida volleyball players Jane Collymore (Englewood, Colo.), Marcie Hampton (Gainesville, Fla.) and Angie McGinnis (Fraser, Mich.) were three of the eight players in attendance during the first day of practice for the USA Women's National Volleyball Team Monday afternoon.
The three players are in contention for positions on the USA National Team, which will compete across the world in various competitions during the summer of 2005. Hampton and McGinnis are veterans of the USA Junior National Team and are also eligible to play for that U.S. team again. The rosters for the teams will be determined at a later date.
Collymore, an outside hitter who earned third-team All-America honors this season from the American Volleyball Coaches Association and honorable mention honors in 2003, concluded 2004 with the second-most kills (604) and points (707) in a season in school history. She was also named the 2004 Southeastern Conference Player of the Year - the 10th straight season in which a Gator earned the honor. She became the 13th Florida player to surpass 1,000 kills in her career and ranks ninth in school history in the category with 1,094.
Hampton was named to the 2004 SEC All-Freshman team after setting a school record with 354 digs in her first campaign in Gainesville. She tied the school record for kills by a freshman with 357 and her total of 403.5 points on the season ranks as the third-best freshman total in school history.
McGinnis was named the 2004 SEC Freshman of the Year and was a second-team All-SEC pick after breaking the school record for assists per game by a freshman (11.03). She also finished with the sixth-highest digs per game average by a freshman in school history (2.30) and cracked Florida's all-time top 10 in career assists after her first season.
The U.S. will be competing at the World Grand Prix, the NORCECA World Championship Qualifier and the NORCECA Championships later this summer and opens the 2005 season against Brazil in Denver (June 2), Fort Collins, Colo. (June 4) and Colorado Springs (June 6) next month.
