W. Golf Tied for 12th after Day One of the NCAA Championship
Wednesday, May 18, 2005 | Women's Golf
The University of Florida women's golf team competed in the opening round of the 2005 NCAA Women's Golf Championship on Tuesday, and finished the initial 18 in a tie for 12th place. The Lady Gators combined for a 301 on the first day of the 72-hole tournament, 17 strokes above par. Florida tied with Ohio State and finished just 14 strokes away from the tournament leader, Southern California (287, +3).
Just behind Southern Cal on the Meadow Course in Sunriver, Ore., is last year's tournament winner UCLA with 288 (+4), followed in by Auburn (290, +6) and Pepperdine (291, +7). Tied for fifth place in the tournament field are Duke and Washington, both carding a 292 (+8).
"We finished today with a 301 and that isn't good enough when you are playing in the NCAA Championship," head coach Jill Briles-Hinton said. "We had three really good scores today and two not so good scores. We can't have that here. We have to have at least four great numbers. We would love to have five, but we definitely need to have four."
Leading the Lady Gators at the 2005 NCAA Championship is senior Andrea Vander Lende (Longwood) who currently sits in a 13-way tie for 21st place. Vander Lende finished the opening round of the Championship with a 73, just two strokes over par. In her last NCAA Championship appearance in 2003, the then sophomore finished the tournament in runner-up position, carding a 297 to earn herself an honorable mention All-America accolade.
Just one stroke behind Vander Lende for the Lady Gators is freshman Tiffany Chudy (Miramar) who fired a 74 (+3) to begin her first NCAA tournament. Chudy finished today in a tie for 35th, while teammate CJ Kim (Rowland Heights, Calif.) ended the first day just four strokes over par, carding a 75 on the Meadows Course, good for a tie in 47th.
Having a rougher time during the initial round of the Championship were freshmen Sandra Gal (Leichlingen, Germany) and Whitney Myers (East Berlin, Penn.). Both rookies finished eight strokes over par to card a 79 on the opening 18 to help occupy a tie for 98th place.
"The low scores hurt us today, they really did," Briles-Hinton said. "It was very disappointing, but we still have three days of golf left and we are just going to take it one shot at a time and add up our scores in the end."
The Lady Gators will tee off tomorrow at 4:20 p.m. ET on the first tee at the Meadows Course in Sunriver, Ore. The Meadows Course is a par 71, 6,312-yard course located on Sunriver Resort's property.
