Friday, June 10, 2005 | Women's Track and Field
Senior All-American Krystle Moss (Alexandria, Va.) and freshman All-American Natalie Knight (Snellville, Ga.) led the 20th ranked University of Florida women's track and field team Thursday as each advanced in their respective events on a sun splashed day in Sacramento, Calif.
Moss navigated the height of 1.80m/5-10.75 to earn a spot in Saturday's 7 p.m. high jump final. The top-15 athletes advanced as 23 cleared the previous bar height of 1.77m/5-09.75. Moss finished ninth in the high jump final a year ago in Austin, Texas after clearing a career –best 1.81m/5-11.25.
"Krystle is a veteran and we talked about what it would take for her to make the final and she did that," head coach Tom Jones said. "I'm very happy for her. This is her second straight final and this certainly validates her performance from last year."
Knight advanced to Saturday's 7:20 p.m. 200-meter by finishing fourth in her second 200m race of the day crossing the line in 23.18, equaling her career-best. The first round of the 200-meter was run a little less than two hours earlier in the day with Knight clocking in at 23.36 to place second in her heat in the preliminaries.
"For Natalie to make this final is a real accomplishment as a freshman," Jones said. "She is running times that juniors and seniors are running. She is a very talented young lady."
Knight is assured of making All-American status in the 200m as the field for Saturday's 200m final features only eight American born athletes.
Also in action Thursday was sophomore Jennifer Wynn (Douglasville, Ga.) who placed 20th in the prelims of the hammer throw. Wynn managed a toss of 56.25m/184-06 in her first appearance at a NCAA Championship competition. The top-12 marks advanced to finals in the hammer.
The 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships continue tomorrow. The Gators will be in action in the discus final, the 4x100m final, and the 400m semi-finals.
