Monday, June 20, 2005 | Men's Track and Field
University of Florida sophomore Kerron Clement (La Porte, Texas) was named the 2005 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Runner of the Year as announced Monday in a vote by the league's coaches.
Clement won his second straight NCAA 400-meter hurdle title in 2005 in becoming the first athlete in nearly 20 years to accomplish the feat and just the sixth in NCAA history. His time of 47.56 was an in-season collegiate record and the world's fastest time in 2005. He picked up three outdoor All-America honors in 2005 after also running on the second-place 4x100m relay (38.54) and the fourth-place 4x400m relay (3:01.36). He capped his career with five outdoor All-America honors, which ties him for fifth most in school history.
Earlier in the 2005 outdoor campaign, Clement won three titles at the SEC Championships after breaking the meet record in the 400m hurdles (48.29) and running the anchor leg on both the victorious 4x100m (39.10) and 4x400m (3:02.23) relays. His total of five SEC outdoor titles ranks third in school history behind only Dennis Mitchell (10) and Mark Everett (8).
Clement also won the SEC Indoor Runner of the Year award in 2005 and becomes the first Gator to win the outdoor honor since the award was initiated in 1993.
Clement will be in action along with several current and former Gators at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships beginning June 23-26 in Carson, Calif.
