Nationally Ranked Gator Track and Field Teams Take to Road for Weekend Competitions
Thursday, January 26, 2006 | General
The No. 20-ranked University of Florida women's track and field team will compete Saturday, Jan. 28, at the University of New Mexico Invitational held at the ABQ Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M. The women's weight throw is scheduled to begin the meet at 11 a.m. EST.
The Gators appeared at No. 20 in the first-ever U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association's rankings released earlier this week. Through two meets in the 2006 indoor season, the squad has met five NCAA provisional marks, with senior All-American Rachel Longfors (Erhard, Minn.) and classmate Jyn Wynn (Douglasville, Ga.) notching two apiece in the weight throw. Sophomore Candace Cabey (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) secured the first NCAA 'B' mark of her career at the Gator Invitational (1/21). Cabey jumped 12.67m/41-7 in her third attempt.
Three members of the No. 8 men's team will make the trip north to the Clemson Heptathlon Championships on Friday and Saturday, while the remainder of the squad will have the weekend off. Senior Kayne DaKoski (Palm Harbor, Fla.) and sophomores Kurt Lee (Spring Hill, Fla.) and Blake Taylor (Lansdale, Pa.) will compete in the event - their first heptathlon competition of the season.
The trio also attended in the meet in 2005 with DaKoski competing unattached and finishing third with 4,879 points. Lee came in fifth with 4,698 points and Taylor was 12th with 4,094 points.
Live results from the University New Mexico Invitational will be available online at www.recordtiming.com. The first event at the Clemson meet on Friday, the 60m, is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. with the high jump to conclude events for the day at 3:25 p.m. The first event on Saturday is the 60m hurdles at 11 p.m. with the 1,000m set to end the competition at 2:20 p.m.
A complete recap of both meets will be available at www.GatorZone.com.
