University of Florida head swimming and diving coach Gregg Troy is one of four nominees for the USA Swimming Coach of the Year award, the organization announced Wednesday. The honor is one of several bestowed as part of the Golden Goggle Awards, a red carpet event that will take place in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Nov. 19 to celebrate the country's top competitive swimming performances of the past year.
Troy was recently selected as an assistant coach for the U.S. men's World Championships team, marking his sixth career stint on the deck of an American squad. His first national team assignment came in 1995, when he served as head coach of the Pan American Games team, and in subsequent years Troy has performed duties as women's Olympic team assistant coach (1996), women's World Championships team head coach (1998), men's Pan Am Games head coach (1999) and U.S. World Championships team head coach (2001). Former UF standout Ryan Lochte will be among the athletes that Troy will help guide when he travels with the World Championships team to Melbourne, Australia, in March 2007.
In 2005-06, the Bellefonte, Pa., native guided the Florida men to their second-consecutive fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, while aiding Lochte in becoming UF's all-time leader in individual NCAA titles with seven crowns. Under Troy's direction, the Gator women took home their sixth top-10 finish at the national meet in as many years.
The nomination is Troy's first bid for a Golden Goggle Award. He is in the running for Coach of the Year honors along with national team coaching mates Bob Bowman, Eddie Reese and Paul Yetter. Fans can cast their votes online by clicking here. Voting begins Oct. 11 and continues through November.
