Weather Plays Havoc on Day 1 of W-Tennis ITA South Region Championships

All six members of the University of Florida women's tennis team competing at the ITA South Region Championships were involved in first round singles matches that included one of the 16 seeds on Thursday, with freshman Megan Alexander, junior Whitney Benik and junior Diana Srebrovic, earning victories. Rain forced the entire event onto just four indoor courts at the University of Alabama facility.
Alexander notched a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 opening-round win against 15th-seeded Fani Chifchieva of Auburn, while Benik, the No. 13 seed, topped Troy's Claudia Strauss, 6-2, 6-1. Alexander plays Miami's Caren Seenauth in the second round on Friday at Noon, ET, while Benik faces Florida State's Nicola Slater at 12:30 pm ET.
Srebrovic, the No. 2 seeded the 64-player draw, made the most of her late start against Auburn's Alex Haney, as the pair was the last match on court and the Gator junior earned the 6-3, 6-4 victory. Srebrovic faces Georgia Tech's Whitney McCray in the second round on Friday afternoon.
Coming up short on the indoor courts for the Gators included junior Lolita Frangulyan, who lost 6-3, 6-2 to Georgia's No. 9-seeded Monika Dancevic, senior Nina Suvak, who dropped a 7-5, 6-0, 6-2 decision to No. 7-seed Courtney Vernon of USF, and freshman Csilla Borsanyi, who fell to Georgia Tech's 12th-seeded Tarryn Rudman 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. All three will be in action on Friday in the consolation draw.
The ITA South Region Championships serves as the qualifying event for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships. The two singles finalists and doubles champion from each of the nine regions earn an at-large spot in the prestigious tournament held November 2-5 in Columbus, Ohio.
