Women?s Tennis Doubles Team Wins ITA South Region Championship

The University of Florida women's tennis doubles team of junior Whitney Benik and senior Nina Suvak captured the ITA South Region Championship Sunday afternoon at the Alabama Tennis Complex.
The fourth-seeded Gator pair began the day with an impressive 8-4 victory over Georgia Tech's No. 2-seeded Kristi Miller and Alison Silverio before defeating Florida State's Lauren MacFarlane and Nicola Slater 9-7 to win their first title as a pair. The victory gives Benik and Suvak an automatic spot in the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships held November 2-5 in Columbus, Ohio.
UF freshman Csilla Borsanyi also had a chance to capture her first collegiate title, but fell short in a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 decision to FSU's Amanda McDowell in the final of the consolation singles draw. The Gator rookie downed Jacksonville's Emese Sulyos 6-2, 6-1 in Sunday's semifinal final to reach her first championship match. McDowell advanced to the final by defeating UF junior Lolita Frangulyan 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinal.
Borsanyi and Frangulyan teamed for the first time and reached the semifinals of the doubles draw, but dropped an 8-4 match to FSU's MacFarlane and Slater.
The Gators have a two week break before competing in their final tournaments of the fall season. Benik and Suvak will compete in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships, while the rest of the team will travel to Peachtree City, Ga., for the SEC Coaches Fall Classic, Nov. 3-5.
