W-Tennis' Srebrovic Wins Opening Round at ITA National Indoor Championships
Thursday, November 2, 2006 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida's Diana Srebrovic launched a successful debut in defending her ITA National Indoor Championships singles title with a first round victory Thursday afternoon at The Racquet Club of Columbus.
Srebrovic, seeded No. 7 in the 32-player singles draw, defeated Nebraska's Imke Reimers, 7-5, 6-3, in her opening match and advances to face Clemson's Carole Salge in Friday's round of 16.
"It was tied at 5-all in the first set and Diana played two solid games to clinch the first set," UF associate head coach Dave Balogh said. "It wasn't a great match, but she played better each game and hopefully she'll continue that trend for the rest of the tournament."
The Gator doubles team of Whitney Benik and Nina Suvak dropped their first round match to Kentucky's Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk, 8-5. The Florida pair continues action in the consolation draw on Friday, playing Auburn-Montgomery's Kamila Dadakhodjeava and Tereza Veverkova.
"We really struggled with our serve early in the match and didn't handle it well," Balogh said. "We started making uncharacteristic errors as a result of our poor serving and it caught up with us. Hopefully, we can serve better on Friday and make a run in the consolation draw."
The ITA National Indoor Championships is the second of three national tournaments for singles and doubles during the 2006-07 collegiate tennis season.
These championships feature a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for men and women, including: champions from Wilson/ITA Regional Championships held across the country during October, the ITA National Small College champions, the winners of the Polo Ralph Lauren Men's All-American Tennis Championships and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships presented by Fila and at-large and wild card selections made last week by the ITA National Tournament Committee. Overall, more than 10,000 players from nearly 600 schools participate annually in the ITA Regional and National Intercollegiate Championships.
