The University of Florida women's tennis team fell behind early and couldn't recover in Sunday's 4-3 loss at 10th-ranked North Carolina Sunday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Indoor Tennis Center.
The loss was the first of the year for the Gators (6-1), as fifth-year head coach Roland Thornqvist lost for just the ninth time at Florida (106-9). Meanwhile the Tar Heels (12-2) collected their highest-ranked victory in school history.
Florida fell behind 2-0 in the match, as the Gators lost the doubles point and sophomore Lolita Frangulyan dropped her No. 6 singles match 6-0, 6-1 to Meg Fanjoy. Courts No. 2 and 4 were just closing out its first set at this time, with the teams splitting the sets.
Senior Alexis Gordon got Florida on the board with an impressive 6-3, 6-3 upset over No. 21 Jenna Long at the No. 1 position. North Carolina, however, came within one win of the match after Sara Anundsen downed Boglarka Berecz 6-2, 6-2 on court No. 3 to give the Tar Heels a 3-1 lead.
At this time, courts No. 4 and 5 were entering a deciding third set and court No. 2 continued to be an all-out battle, as UNC took the first set in a tiebreak and the second remaining on-serve through the first six games. During this spell, Nina Suvak had served for her No. 5 singles match against Laura Reichert with a 5-4 lead, but Reichert earned the break and took the second set 7-5 to force a deciding third. She regrouped in the third set and held a 5-1 lead when the team match was decided, as Caitlin Collins defeated Diana Srebrovic 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) on court No. 2, rallying from a 5-3 deficit in the second set tiebreak.
Suvak then closed out her match with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 victory on court No. 5. Whitney Benik followed with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-0 against Austin Smith at the No. 4 position to close out the scoring.
Florida lost the doubles point for the second time this season, with only the Gators' No. 2 team of Lolita Frangulyan and Diana Srebrovic earning a victory, as they defeated 47th-ranked Caitlin Collins and Laura Reichert, 8-6.
The Gators continue their three-match road trip, next traveling to Oxford, Miss., on Friday, March 3 to play Ole Miss in the team's Southeastern Conference opener.
