The University of Florida's Sha Brooks (Jackson, Tenn.) was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for the fourth time this season, the league announced Monday.
No other true freshman has earned the league's weekly rookie award as many times as Brooks. Tennessee's Candace Parker, a redshirt freshman, has been recognized five times this season with the weekly honor.
The Gator's 5-foot-7 guard tied her career high with 25 points on Sunday in the thrilling upset victory over fifth-ranked Tennessee in Knoxville. Brooks hit eight field goals with a 6-for-9 effort from the free throw line in the historic win. She scored four of UF's 13 points in overtime, including a streaking lay-up with just over a minute remaining to give the Gators a 90-87 lead. With 10.2 seconds remaining in overtime, she calmly canned two free throws to give Florida a 95-91 advantage and help solidify the thrilling upset.
The victory was the Gators first ever in 16 tries in Knoxville, as Florida became the first unranked team to defeat Tennessee in Thompson-Boling Arena.
Brooks ranks second for the Gators in scoring, averaging 13.3 points per game, along with a team-high 60 steals. She also has connected on a team-high 56 three-pointers, hitting 34.1 percent (56-164) of her long range shots.
Brooks and the Gators earned the No. 5 seed in the SEC Tournament, where Florida plays 12th-seeded Mississippi State on Thursday in North Little Rock, Ark.
