UF Women's T&F Heads to Arkansas for Annual Tyson Invitational
Wednesday, February 8, 2006 | Women's Track and Field
The University of Florida women's track and field squad will compete in the prestigious Tyson Invitational this weekend, held at the Randal Tyson Track Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark. The two-day event will begin with the collegiate long jump at 11 a.m. EST Friday, Feb. 10, and will conclude Saturday, Feb. 11 with the running of the 4x400m relay.
The meet this weekend will serve as a preview of the NCAA Indoor Championships for UF as nine teams ranked in the top-20 of the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll will take part in the competition. Florida will return to the Randal Tyson Track Center in one month for the NCAA Indoor Championships (March 10-11). It marks the first team-scoring meet for the Gators this season.
The Gators last competed at the Pepsi Invitational on Super Bowl Sunday and came away with a season-high five NCAA provisional marks, including two each in the weight throw and one in the 800m.
Senior All-American Rachel Longfors (Erhard, Minn.) and classmate Jyn Wynn (Douglasville, Ga.) each reached the NCAA 'B' standard in the weight throw, while senior Dara Altman (Tampa, Fla.) and sophomore Natalie Moser (Tampa, Fla.) both secured their first NCAA provisionals in the pole vault. Freshman Shannon Leinert (Wildwood, Mo.) had an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 800m, the first non-field event NCAA 'B' standard by the Gators this season.
Last year at the Tyson Invitational, All-American Tiandra Ponteen won the 400m with an NCAA automatic qualifying clocking of 51.68 to lead the Gators to five NCAA automatic or provisional standards in Saturday's competition alone.
Live results from the 2006 Tyson Invitational will be available on the Internet at www.flashtiming.com.
