Thursday, March 30, 2006 | Women's Track and Field
The University of Florida will host the only outdoor track and field meet of the season on Saturday April 1, when the Gators welcome several teams to the Diet Pepsi Classic at James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track.
Female athletes from 13 different schools, including eight from the Sunshine State, will take part in the meet this weekend. A majority of the UF women's track and field team will be making their outdoor debuts this weekend.
The first 200 fans in attendance will receive free stopwatches, while the first 500 fans will be given free t-shirts. In addition, the first 200 fans will have the opportunity to enjoy a free BBQ meal from Terrell's. Admittance is free. The first field event is the women's hammer at 9 a.m. and the first event on the track is the men's steeplechase at 12:30 p.m.
A handful of athletes from the women's track and field team competed at the inaugural Walt Disney World Invitational March 23-25, with senior Jyn Wynn (Douglasville, Ga.) and sophomore Tina Epps (Shalimar, Fla.) both having strong showings in the meet.
Wynn currently holds the nation's fifth-highest mark in the hammer with a throw of 61.37m/201-4. It is a new personal-best for the senior and is sixth on the all-time Florida lists. Epps earned her first collegiate individual victory, pacing the field in the javelin with a toss of 36.69m/120-4. Epps is currently eighth on the all-time UF top-10.
Freshman Sarah Pastoriza (Miami, Fla.), who was competing in her first-ever track and field meet, provided a big splash in her collegiate debut with the 10th-best throw in Florida history in the javelin, achieving a mark of 35.67m/117-0. She and her twin sister Jessica did not compete in track and field in high school with both making their marks on the softball diamond.
Senior pole vaulter Dara Altman (Tampa, Fla.) finished second in the collegiate pole vault field, clearing the bar at 3.65m/11-11.75. Freshmen Lori Bowen (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Alex Black (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) both turned in top-10 performances in the pole vault, with Bowen placing seventh (3.50m/11-5.75) and Black coming in eighth (3.35m/10-11.75).
