UF Leads SEC with 59 Earning Academic Honor Roll Accolades
Thursday, March 30, 2006 | General
The University of Florida had 59 student-athletes named to the 2005-06 Southeastern Conference Winter Academic Honor Roll, SEC commissioner Mike Slive announced on Thursday. The Gators' total led the league for SEC-sponsored sports, with Georgia ranking second with 38 recipients in those sports and Kentucky third with 36.
With the conference-leading 43 Gator fall sport recipients, UF totaled 102 during the 2005-06 academic year to top the league for SEC-sponsored sports.
The Gator men's swimming & diving team's 20 recipients matches the SEC record the team set in 2002-03. UF's men's basketball (5) and gymnastics (10) team's shared the lead in the league within their respective sports. The 10 tumblers were a Gator record for gymnastics recipients, surpassing the previous high of nine set in 2002-03. The 2005-06 awards also marked the third consecutive year the Gator women's basketball team has placed seven on the list, which is the all-time high for the team, as all seven eligible members of the team met the academic standard this year. The UF's women's swimming and diving team garnered 17 honors, trailing only Georgia's 19.
The 2005-06 SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2005 Spring, Summer and Fall terms. Student-athletes need a 3.0 grade point average for the academic year or cumulative to be named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll. A total of 334 student-athletes from the 12 league institutions were named to the list.
