The University of Florida women's tennis team swept Mississippi State 7-0 Sunday afternoon at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
The Gator's dominance over the Lady Bulldogs continued, as the orange and blue improved to 26-0 all-time against MSU. Florida also improved to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the Southeastern Conference, while MSU falls to 2-7 and 0-2 in league action.
Florida won the doubles point by earning victories on courts No. 2 and 3, before the Gators turned up their play even more by dominating on all six singles courts.
“We set two goals entering this weekend's matches, the first was to play with more passion in doubles and play and compete with more emotion and determination overall. We definitely achieved that,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “Our second goal was to improve overall and have all six singles players compete hard at the same time, we also did that on Sunday. We did as good a job as we could with getting off the courts quickly with wins. We competed at a very high level on all six singles courts. I'm proud of our players' progress. If we continue to improve and play like we did today, we have a chance to be pretty good by the end of the year.”
Florida received impressive straight set singles wins from Alexis Gordon, who posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory on court No. 2 and extended her dual match record to 8-0. Also collecting victories were Whitney Benik, who improved to 9-0 in dual match singles play, Boglarka Berecz, Alex Liles, Diana Srebrovic and Nina Suvak.
The Gators return to action on Friday, when the team plays its SEC home opener, hosting No. 29 Tennessee on Friday before a showdown with No. 23 Georgia on Sunday.
