Tuesday, March 7, 2006 | Women's Track and Field
Four athletes from the University of Florida women's track and field team made the field for the 2006 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, which take place March 10-11 in Fayetteville, Ark., at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
Senior All-American Rachel Longfors (Erhard, Minn.) and senior Jyn Wynn (Douglasville, Ga.) will take part in the weight throw, sophomore All-American Natalie Knight (Snellville, Ga.) will run in the 200m and freshman Shannon Leniert (Wildwood, Mo.) rounds out the competitors in the 800m.
A four-time All-American, Longfors highlights the group after recording the 10th-best throw nationally at the Gator Invitational Jan. 21, launching the 20-pound weight 20.67m/67-9.75. Last year, she earned All-American honors in the weight throw at the NCAA Indoor Championships after finishing eighth in the field with a mark of 20.93m/68-8.
Wynn recorded a PR at the Florida Fast Times last chance meet Thursday, March 2, with a toss of 19.83m/65-0.75 on her final attempt. Her mark is the 16th-highest nationally this season. This will be Wynn's first NCAA Indoor Championships appearance.
Knight's run of 23.83 in the 200m preliminaries of the SEC Championships, which converts to 23.63 on the national list, was the 21st-fastest clocking nationally. In 2005, Knight anchored the 4x400m relay squad that placed fifth at the NCAA Indoor Championships field and earned All-American honors.
Leinert will be making her first appearance at an NCAA championship after earning her right to be a member of the field in the 800m. The freshman sensation clocked a PR in the event at the Florida Fast Times qualifier March 2, crossing the finish line in 2:07.09, which converts to 2:06.69 – the 16th-fastest time in the country.
