The third-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team capped its regular season with a 4-0 victory over South Carolina (11-9, 4-7) and posted a perfect 11-0 record in Southeastern Conference action to capture the league title outright.
The Gators (18-1, 11-0 SEC) opening the match by winning the doubles point, earning victories on courts No. 2 and No. 3 to snap a two-match skid of dropping the doubles point.
Freshman Keri Robison gave Florida a 2-0 lead with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 victory over Justine Walsh at the No. 6 singles position. Diana Srebrovic earned the second Gator singles win with a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Natasa Vuckovic on court No. 2 shortly before Alexis Gordon provided the finishing touches on Florida's SEC regular season title with her 6-2, 7-5 victory against Gira Schofield at the No. 1 position. Play at the remaining courts was abandoned once the double point and dual match was clinched.
“We had to take our games to another level today because South Carolina really played well and came out ready,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “I am really proud of this team because they work hard every week to improve. They have been committed to improving and making each other better and today their hard work culminated with winning the SEC championship outright. It feels great!”
The Gators earned the No. 1 seed in the SEC Tournament and received one of four first-round byes. Florida plays host to the four-day event which begins Thursday, April 20 at the Ring Tennis Complex.
“We are extremely excited about hosting the SEC Tournament,” Thornqvist said. “We want to continue our momentum and play well in front of our home fans. Our team really enjoys playing at the Ring Tennis Complex and can't wait to host the tournament.”
