The University of Florida women's tennis team won its ninth consecutive match, sweeping Auburn 7-0 Sunday afternoon at the Luther Young Tennis Complex.
The seventh-ranked Gators were challenged in doubles, but still managed to win all three positions before convincingly capturing all six singles matches in straight sets.
Florida improved to 15-1 overall and 8-0 in the Southeastern Conference, setting up a showdown this weekend in Gainesville against 11th-ranked Vanderbilt (18-3, 8-0), the only other undefeated team remaining in league action. The Gators and Commodores begin action at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex on Friday at 5 p.m. Florida then plays its final home regular season match on Sunday against Kentucky.
Against Auburn (5-13, 0-8 SEC), the Gators captured the doubles point for the 14th time this season before racing out to a quick 3-0 lead after Alex Liles and Diana Srebrovic each posted double-bagels on courts No. 5 and No. 2, respectively.
Freshman Keri Robison then provided the clinching dual match victory with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Dzeljan Memisi at the No. 6 spot. The Gator rookie improved her collegiate singles record to 3-0 with Sunday's decision.
Nina Suvak then extended her team-high winning streak to 10 consecutive with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Tori Almango at the No. 4 spot. Whitney Benik improved to 8-0 in SEC dual matches with her 6-2, 6-2 win against Whitney Chappell on court No. 3. Senior Alexis Gordon capped the sweep with her 6-2, 6-3 victory over Alex Haney at the No. 1 spot, ending Haney's four-match win streak.
“I thought we were able to close out another strong weekend,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “We were sharper today and continue to improve. I thought our win on Friday against Alabama indoors was a solid victory and we road that momentum into today's match.”
