Women?s T&F Set for SEC Championships
Tuesday, May 9, 2006 | Women's Track and Field
The postseason begins this week for the University of Florida women's track and field squad as it takes part in the 2006 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships, held on the campus of the University of Arkansas at the newly-constructed John McDonnell Field.
The first Gators are slated to participate in the women's hammer throw at 11 a.m. EST Friday, May 12. The meet's first running event is the women's 800m preliminary round and is set for an 8 p.m. start Friday night. A league team champion will be crowned following Sunday's third and final day in Fayetteville.
Sophomore Lindsay Sundell (Northport, N.Y.) is the lone UF athlete bringing a No. 1 ranking on the SEC top-10 lists as she earned a school-record time of 10:21.10 in the 3,000m steeplechase, which is over 13 seconds faster than her nearest competition in the league.
Senior All-American Rachel Longfors (Erhard, Minn.) looks to return to the lineup in the discus after a minor back injury forced the reigning NCAA runner-up in the discus to sit out the Penn Relays two weeks ago. Currently, she holds the league's fourth-highest mark in the discus, launching a toss of 56.09m/184-0 at the Diet Pepsi Classic in April.
Construction crews have been working around the clock for months leading up to this weekend on the John McDonnell Field in order for the facility to host the prestigious meet which features six teams ranked within the nation's top-25.
