UF?s Bryan Augenstein Named To 2006 USA Baseball National Team
Sunday, July 2, 2006 | Baseball
Sophomore Bryan Augenstein (Sebastian, Fla.) from the University of Florida was named to the 22-man roster for the 2006 USA Baseball National Team announced on Sunday. The USA Baseball National Team consists of the top collegiate baseball players in the country. The team performs each summer in a schedule of exhibition games across America and overseas versus the world's top baseball talent. They also take on the Japanese Collegiate All-Stars in an annual five-game series, and lead the all-time series between the two countries by a 20-14 margin - having never lost the series on home soil.
A second-team All-Southeastern Conference recipient in '06, Augenstein anchored UF's pitching staff with a 9-6 record and a 3.07 earned run average and limited opponents to a .241 batting average. The 6'5" right-hander notched 98 strikeouts and issued 24 walks over 111.1 innings and fired three complete games. He worked at least seven innings in 13 of his 15 starts and collected four wins in SEC action, highlighted by a 6-4 triumph over Eastern Division titlist and league co-champion Kentucky and a 4-3 decision over Western Division winner and league co-champion Alabama. Augenstein blazed out of the gates with a 5-0 ledger and three of his setbacks were by a single run.
Three players, J.P. Arencibia (Tennessee), Sean Doolittle (Virginia) and David Price (Vanderbilt), made the team for the second-straight year. The squad is comprised of seven freshmen, 14 sophomores and one junior. The Gators were represented on the club last year by the trio of Adam Davis (Fort Myers, Fla.), Brian Jeroloman (Wellington, Fla.) and Matt LaPorta (Port Charlotte, Fla.).
The team will practice tomorrow morning at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, R.I., and will open its official slate against Taiwan on July 4 at 6:05 p.m.
