University of Florida rising sophomore Lucas Salatta (Sao Paulo, Brazil) wrapped up his meet at the 2006 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championships on Sunday with a 14th-place finish in the 200-meter individual medley, clocking in at 2:05.79.
Salatta's time of 2:04.15 in prelims earned him the seventh spot in the all-time UF record book for the 200-meter IM. Over the course of the championships, the seven-time All-American added his name to the school record books five times. He also teamed with former Florida swimmer and fellow Brazilian Gabriel Mangabeira to help the country's 400-meter MR squad place seventh (3:44.78) on Sunday.
“Lucas swam well this weekend, turning in several career-best times,” Florida head coach Gregg Troy said. “He continues to show signs of improvement, and he looks like a real player as we approach 2008.”
Former Gator star Ryan Lochte finished his run at the Championships on a positive note, winning the silver medal in the 200-meter IM with a time of 1:56.11. His time ranks as the fourth-fastest in world history, giving him two all-time top-10 times in the event (he is also eighth with a time of 1:56.78). With the second-place effort, Lochte left his first Pan Pacs with three medals – gold in the 800-meter FR silver in the 200-meter back and the 200-meter IM.
“Ryan produced some really good efforts here in Canada,” Troy said. “He made the World Championships team in several different events and was really impressive on a world stage.”
Two more world records fell at the hands of American men on Sunday, giving the group five in four days. Michael Phelps swam the 200-meter IM in 1:55.84 to break his own record of 1:55.94, which he set in 2003. Brendan Hansen accounted for the second world record of the night, besting his own 15-day old mark of 2:08.74 in the 200-meter breast with a time of 2:08.50.
