Florida?s Stacy Bishop Picks Up SEC Offensive Soccer Player of the Week Honors
Monday, August 28, 2006 | Soccer
University of Florida junior Stacy Bishop (Land O'Lakes) is the first selection of the season for the Southeastern Conference's Offensive Soccer Player of the Week award, the league announced Monday. This is the first such honor of Bishop's career and it is the 22nd time a Gator has earned the SEC Player of the Week distinction in the program's 12-year history. Auburn sophomore goalkeeper Allison Whitworth was named the SEC Defensive Player of Week and Georgia forward Carrie Patterson picked up the SEC Freshman of the Week honor.
Bishop's penalty kick in the 86th minute of Friday's season opener versus then No. 1 and defending NCAA champion Portland tied the match at 1-all. The match went to overtime and ended tied 1-1. Bishop led all players in Friday's match with five shots and also had two shots in Sunday's 3-1 win over Kennesaw State.
Friday's match was the Gator debut for Bishop. A member of the LSU team in 2003 and 2004, she transferred to Florida in January of 2005 and sat out the 2005 season due to SEC transfer rules. As a sophomore at LSU, Bishop earned All-SEC second team honors and ranked among the league's leaders in all offensive categories. She was named a Gator team captain last week by a vote of her teammates.
The Gators (1-0-1) continue their home stand by playing host to Fresno State (2-0) Friday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. Friday's match can be heard on WRUF-AM 850 and live, streaming video is available at www.Gatorvision.tv. The first 1,000 fans at Friday's match will receive a Gator soccer hat courtesy of Gatorade.
