Horschel Heads Into Third Round Tied For Eighth At Western Amateur

University of Florida rising sophomore Billy Horschel (Grant, Fla.) resumed his second round at the 104th Western Amateur on Friday. When play was halted just before 9 p.m. EST on Thursday night, Horschel was -2 through 13 holes.
The 2006 PING first-team All-American got off to a blazing start on the back nine Thursday, birdying holes the par-four 10th, par-five 13th and par-four 14th to drop to -3 after five holes. He would give a stroke back at both the 16th and 18th holes, and made the turn at -1 overall.
He birdied the fourth hole to get back to -2, but ended up giving the stroke back with a bogey on the fifth before play was stopped. When he resumed his round on Friday morning, Horschel collected three pars and a double-bogey to put his score at 70-71 = 141 (+1) after two rounds. He enters the third round tied for eighth place.
Incoming freshman Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) recorded another solid outing in the second round, shooting a one-over 71 to position himself in a tie for 15th heading into the third round. He began the day on the back nine with birdies on the 13th and 15th holes and made the turn at even par. He made six pars and three bogeys on the final nine holes of his day to head to the clubhouse at +3.
Starting on the front nine, junior Manuel Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) scored a birdie on the second hole, but went on to add three bogeys before making the turn, leaving him at +8 overall. He struggles out of the break, bogeying four of the first six holes, but came back strong with birdies on the 16th, 17th and 18th to finish the day at 73 (+3). Overall, Villegas shot a 76-73 = 149 (+9) for the tournament.
Former Gator James Vargas was +8 for the tournament after play was stopped during his round on Thursday. He will finished the tournament in a tie for 61st place.
