Lady Gator Golfers Tied for Seventh After First Day of Play at New Mexico

The University of Florida women's golf team combined for a two-round score of 596 (302-294) in the first day of action at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational, and is currently in a three-way tie for seventh place. Junior Sandra Gal (Leichlingen, Germany) sits in sixth place individually, as she fired back-to-back rounds of 71 on the par-73, 6,069-yard University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque, N.M.
Gal started off strong in the first round of play in the 54-hole, two-day tournament with two birdies on the front nine. In her afternoon performance, she recorded four additional birdies before bogeys on the 11th and 16th holes cost her two strokes.
Junior captain Tiffany Chudy (Miramar, Fla.) and redshirt sophomore Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) each finished the day with five-over scores of 151 after carding identical rounds of 79 and 72.
Sophomore Brittany Nelson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) and junior Eleanor Tucker (Wilson, N.C.) finished the day tied for 52nd and 76th, respectively. Nelson began the day with a one-over 74, and carded a 79 in the second round to finish with a seven-over 153. Tucker shot a 158 for the day, with rounds of 78 and 80.
Arizona State (294-281=575) currently holds an eight-stroke lead over second-place South Carolina (295-288=583), while Texas A&M (294-291) rounds out the top three teams with a one-over 585 in the 17-team field.
South Carolina's Jenna Pearson leads all individuals with a seven-under 139 (72-67), and UTEP's Julliane Kim (69-71=140), Texas A&M's Ashley Knoll (74-66=140) and South Carolina's Benedicte Toumpsin (71-69=140) share a three-way tie for second place.
The third and final round of the 28th Annual Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational will tee off tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. EST with a shotgun start. Live results can be found at http://www.golfstat.com.
