Women?s Tennis Continues Solid Play at Gator Fall Classic
Saturday, September 16, 2006 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida women's tennis team swept three matches against Duke in doubles action, while winning three of five singles matches versus USF during the second day of play at the Gator Fall Classic.
The event concludes Sunday, when Florida and USF face off in doubles before the Gators play athletes from Miami. The other competition features Duke and Miami battling in doubles and the Blue Devils playing USF in singles. Action begins at 8 a.m. at the Ring Tennis Complex. Admission is free.
Florida began Saturday's play with a trio of 8-5 victories on the doubles courts, rebounding from Friday's matches, when the Gators lost two of three versus Miami teams.
“I thought we did a better job in doubles today than we did yesterday,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “The pairings that played today worked a lot together in practices and had a chance to build chemistry and it showed. Friday's teams hadn't really worked much at all together and that showed, too. Today, we had good communication, whereas on Friday it was strained. We're working on that.”
Lolita Frangulyan and Diana Srebrovic paired for the win over Duke's Daniela Bercek and Jenny Zika, Whitney Benik and Nina Suvak teamed to down Melissa Mang and Liz Plotkin, while Csilla Borsanyi and Alex Liles defeated Kristin Cargill and Amanda Granson.
“In singles, I thought we fought really, really hard,” Thornqvist said. “South Florida played well on courts No. 1 and No. 2 and got us, but we gave it all we had and that's all you can ask, especially this early in the season.”
Suvak earned a shortened victory after Jessica Sweeting retired with an injury after the Gator senior took a quick 5-0 lead. Frangulyan turned in her second consecutive straight-set victory with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Gabriela Duch. Borsanyi also netted her second singles win of the tournament, posting a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Liz Cruz.
“Csilla played a really good opponent in Liz Cruz and got a solid win,” Thornqvist said. “We've had trouble playing well again Liz in the past. Csilla kept her head on straight and played really good tennis. Lolita also played really, really well. She's looked great in practice and did so today. She's starting to get more consistent in her play and that's helped.”
