University of Florida head swimming and diving coach Gregg Troy has been nominated for the 2007 Golden Goggles Coach of the Year as announced yesterday by U.S.A. Swimming.
Troy, who has been at the helm of Florida's men's team for the past nine years and the women's team for the past 10 years, has quite a resume to his credit. In his career Troy has coached 49 Olympians, over 200 All-Americans and has seen his athletes swim to more than 150 U.S. and international records.
Perhaps Troy's most well-known athlete, Ryan Lochte has developed into one of the world's most dominant swimmers. In March, Troy watched Lochte swim to a gold medal in the 200-meter back in world record time, breaking the two-year winning streak of Aaron Peirsol. For Lochte it was just his first individual world championship. Troy was on deck to witness the historic moment, serving as an assistant coach for the men's team.
Currently, Troy is guiding six Olympians through yet another season with the Gators. In all he has coached a total of 10 Olympic medalists and in 2004 coached 10 Gator athletes that competed at the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. This summer, Troy guided Caroline Burckle (Louisville, Ky.) to a gold medal at the Pan American Games and a nod to the 2007 U.S. National Team thanks to her performance at the Pan-Am's.
Troy will be joined at the Golden Goggles celebration by Lochte, who has been nominated in four categories including Male Athlete of the Year, Male Performance of the Year, Relay Performance of the Year, and the Perseverance Award. Lochte was nominated for the Male Athlete of the Year award thanks to his performance at this year's World Championships as well as his accomplishments at the 2007 ConocoPhillips National Championships where he won two gold medals in the 200 and 400-meter individual medley events.
The Golden Goggles extravaganza will take place on Sunday November 18 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly, California. Carson Daly of NBC's “Last Call with Carson Daly” will host this year's event. Fan's can vote for both Troy and Lochte at www.goldengoggles.com. Voting opened October 15 and will continue through November 10.
