No. 10 VB To Open NCAA Play With College of Charleston On Thursday
Thursday, November 29, 2007 | Volleyball
The 10th-ranked and 13th-seeded University of Florida volleyball team will kick off its 17th-straight NCAA Championship on Thursday night when it plays host to College of Charleston at 7:30 p.m. ET.
UF is hosting first and second-round play for the third-consecutive year and the 15th time in head coach Mary Wise's 17 seasons in Gainesville. The Orange and Blue also received a national seed for the third year in a row, and the fifth time in the last six years.
The Gators (27-2, 19-1 Southeastern Conference), who have won 11 of their last 12 matches, will face a C of C team that captured both the Southern Conference regular-season and tournament titles en route to posting a 26-7 overall record. The two schools have never met in volleyball, but UF owns two NCAA Championship wins over Southern Conference teams, having defeated Tennessee-Chattanooga and Georgia Southern in 1998 and 2003, respectively.
Florida A&M and Oklahoma will square off at 5 p.m. ET in the first match of the Gainesville Sub-Regional. The winner of the Florida-College of Charleston match will meet the victor of the opening contest at 7 p.m. on Saturday for a berth in next weekend's Gainesville Regional.
The radio call of the Gators' match with College of Charleston can be found on WRUF-AM 850, as well as www.GatorZone.com. Streaming video of all three matches at the Gainesville Sub-Regional will be carried free by GatorVision Online.
