Florida Soccer Players Melanie Booth and Lauren Hyde Named NSCAA/adidas All-Americans
Sunday, December 16, 2007 | Soccer
University of Florida senior Melanie Booth (Burlington, Ontario) and sophomore Lauren Hyde (Carmel, Ind.) are both part of the NSCAA/adidas All-America teams, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America released Saturday. A total of 13 Gator players have picked up a total of 20 NSCAA All-America honors in the program's 13-year history.
The pair were part of the Gator backline that allowed just 12 goals in 2007, including a league-low five in Southeastern Conference regular-season play. Florida's goals against average of .468 ranked as the fourth lowest in the nation. The Gators recorded 16 shutouts in 2007 and ranked third in the final national rankings with its shutout percentage of .640.
This is Booth's second appearance on the NSCAA All-America team, as she was a first-team selection as a junior in 2005. She sat out the 2006 season due to Canadian National Team commitments and missed the first seven matches of the 2007 season as she was with Canada at the FIFA Women's World Cup in China. Booth started 17 of Florida's remaining 18 matches of 2007, playing the entirety of nine matches. After the final weekend of regular-season action, Booth was named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week and to the Soccer America and SoccerBuzz.com national teams of the week.
This is Hyde's first All-America selection. She made her second consecutive appearance on the All-SEC first team in 2007 after starting every match at center back. She led UF again in 2007 with total minutes played, as she averaged more than 91 minutes per match and played the entirety of all but two matches. Her five assists tied for second among the 2007 Gators. Hyde was recognized by various outlets during the course of the season, earning the SEC Defensive Player of the Week honor on Oct. 29. She also was named the TopDrawer Soccer's National Player of the Week on Sept. 10.
Booth and Hyde were joined on the NSCAA All-Southeast team by three other teammates – seniors Stacy Bishop (Land O'Lakes, Fla.), KeLeigh Hudson (Marietta, Ga.) and junior Ameera Abdullah (Denver, Colo.).
Bishop was named to the region's second team. She led the Gators in goals (10), assists (10) and points (30) in 2007. Bishop made her second consecutive appearance on the All-SEC first team in 2007 and was named the most valuable player of the SEC Tournament.
Hudson and Abdullah each were named to the region's third team. Hudson was second among the Gators with nine goals and 23 points plus shared second with five assists. Both she and Abdullah were named to the 2007 All-SEC second team. She turned in four goals and 13 points in 2007, including sharing second on the team with five assists. Abdullah also was named to the SEC All-Tournament team after turning in two goals and an assist in the championship match.
During the 2007 season, Florida turned in a record of 17-5-3, advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 and won its eighth Southeastern Conference and SEC Tournament titles.
