Monday, December 3, 2007 | Women's Basketball
The Gators play their fifth game in 11 days, but it also will be the last time they hit the court before a 12-day break. Florida entertains Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday, December 4 beginning at 7 p.m. in the O'Connell Center. Tuesday also is 'DOLLAR NIGHT,' with all general admission tickets, along with hot dogs and other select concession items are only $1!
Game Day Gator Tales
Florida continues and concludes its hectic competition schedule on Tuesday, December 4th, when the team takes the court to play its fifth game in 11 days, entertaining Florida Gulf Coast in the O'Connell Center.
The Gators then take a much-needed break, as final exams loom on the UF campus this week and run through December 14th.
Sunshine State Milestone Alert
The Gators take their second crack at win No. 200 versus Sunshine State teams, entering Tuesday's affair against Florida Gulf Coast University with a 199-58 all-time record.
FGCU is the 23rd different team from the state of Florida the Gators will play in the 34-year history of the program.
Individual Milestone Alert
Junior Sha Brooks enters Tuesday's game with 980 career points ... needing 20 more to become the 15th different Gator to reach the 1,000-point milestone. During her 68-game career, Brooks has scored at least 20 points 14 times, but hasn't hit the mark this season.
UF vs. Atlantic Sun Conference Teams
Florida holds a 54-8 all-time record against teams from the Atlantic Sun, with the bulk of those meetings coming against Stetson (20-3) and UCF (23-0).
FGCU is the third of three opponents from the Atlantic Sun Conference Florida is scheduled to play this season. The Gators defeated Stetson (54-50) but lost to Jacksonville (75-64).
Scouting Florida Gulf Coast
The Eagles enter their first season of Division I competition, beginning a four-year reclassification period, but don't let the change of NCAA competition fool you! Florida Gulf Coast reached the 2007 NCAA Division II National Championship game last season, falling to Southern Connecticut, 61-45, in the title game. That loss was FGCU's only one of the year, entering the championship game riding a 34-game win streak.
Delia De La Torre and Adrianne McNally are the team's leading returning scorers and rebounders from last year's magical season and, as expected, appear at the top of this season's stat sheet. De La Torre is the Eagles' top scorer with 17.2 points per game, while McNally chips in 8.2 points. Amanda Pierce joins De La Torre in the double-digits category, netting 10.2 per game, with the bulk of her scoring coming from the 3-point arc where she hits 41.5 percent (10-24).
FGCU gained membership into the 12-team Atlantic Sun Conference, where the team was picked in the preseason polls to finish No. 6 by the media and No. 10 by the league's coaches.
First Timers
Florida Gulf Coast is one of six different teams this season Florida will be playing for the first time in program history.
Robert Morris was the first of the first-timers on the Gator's 2007-08 schedule, as Florida earned a hard-fought 67-63 win over the Colonials on Nov. 12th. Florida lost its series debut to Jacksonville, 75-64, on Nov. 28. Other new series include: Saint Louis (Dec. 22) and either of Florida's possible second round opponents at the State Farm Classic Alabama A&M or UNC Asheville (Dec. 29).
Five Sunshine State Foes in 2007-08
Florida Gulf Coast is one of five teams from the Sunshine State Florida will play during the 2007-08 season.
Florida's first in-state test was against Florida State on Nov. 23 (lost 81-78), but the Gators regrouped for a 54-50 win over Stetson on Nov. 26, before falling to Jacksonville (75-64).
Still to come ... Florida A&M on January 2nd to complete its five-game stint against in-state foes.
Whew!
After Tuesday's game, which is the team's fifth in 11 days, the Gators will not play again for 12 days! No games can be scheduled during the final exam period, which runs from Sat., December 8th through Friday, December 14th. Florida's next game is against TCU on Sunday, December 16th.
