No. 12 Men's Tennis Defeats USF, 4-3
Sunday, February 25, 2007 | Men's Tennis
The No. 12 University of Florida men's tennis team held off USF in the doubles and went on to a 4-3 win Sunday afternoon at the Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville. UF improved to 4-2 on the season while USF slipped to 3-6.
“It won't get the same attention that we got from beating Baylor (4-3, on Feb. 4), but I thought it was the most complete team match we've played,” said head coach Andy Jackson. “We didn't think today's match would be easy and it wasn't, but we are very excited about the result.”
Jesse Levine and Greg Ouellette worked quickly in doubles as they teamed on the top court to defeat Mahmoud Hamed and Thomas Estrada, 8-2, in 38 minutes. With the win the two improved to 5-0 on the season.
UF was tested on the remaining courts before earning victories. Nestor Briceno and Geoffrey Barton clinched the point for the Gators against Henning Hipp and Daniel Daudt on court three. After falling behind 5-2, the pair won five straight games and went on to win 8-6. Dan Cash and Billy Mulligan gave UF wins on all three courts by edging Ales Svigelj and Marc Jaeger on court two, 9-7.
“One of the reasons why I'm excited is because we played better in doubles today than we've played this year including the Baylor match,” Jackson continued. “The doubles will be the key to the future.”
Singles play saw the Gators jump to a 4-0 lead to secure the match before USF got on the board.
Levine, who entered the ITA rankings last Wednesday at No. 45, took a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Marc Jaeger. With his win, Levine stayed perfect on his career (5-0) with each coming in straight sets.
Ouellette (No. 18) made it 3-0 in Florida's favor with a straight set 6-2, 6-2 win against Hipp one spot lower in the order. Ouellette also collected his fifth victory of the season (5-1 overall) to equal Levine for the best total among all Gators.
Dolberg got the win UF was looking for to clinch the match with a 6-2, 6-3 showing on court six against Diego Toledo. The win was the first for the UF senior in his last four outings.
Florida returns to the court Friday, March 2, as the Gators travel to Oxford, Miss., to take on the fourth-ranked Rebels in the SEC season opener. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
