The University of Florida women's tennis team played its first match of the year as the No. 1-ranked team in the country and lived up to its billing with a 4-0 victory over No. 16 Tennessee Friday afternoon at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
The Gators (11-0) won their 20th consecutive Southeastern Conference regular-season match, improving to 2-0 in league action this year. The victory sets up a national showdown in Athens on Sunday against No. 3 Georgia, featuring two of the three undefeated teams remaining in the country.
Florida captured the doubles point to open the match, which was halted once the Gators clinched the victory.
Lolita Frangulyan and Anastasia Revzina paired together for the first time in their careers and captured Florida's first win of the match, with an 8-2 decision over Vicky Jones and Zsofia Zubor. The pair of Whitney Benik and Nina Suvak snapped a three-match slide to provide the clinching doubles win, 8-4, over Connor Vogel and Caitlin Whoriskey at the No. 1 position, just as the Gators were down big at the No. 2 match, which was abandoned once Benik and Suvak claimed their win.
“Our No. 1 doubles team played very well today,” Florida head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “They played aggressive at the net and took what they worked on in practice and were able to transfer it into a real match when it counted. Their play was definitely the highlight of the match for us.”
Florida held leads on all six singles courts, but it was Megan Alexander, Whitney Benik and Nina Suvak who were able to complete their matches and give the Gators the win.
Alexander was the first Gator off the singles court after collecting a 6-4, 6-2 win against Connor Vogel at the No. 2 spot. Benik then topped Vicky Jones 6-2, 6-3 on court No. 5, before Suvak topped Caitlin Whorishkey, 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 3 position. Suvak, who was playing No. 3 for the first time this season, rose to the occasion and posted her 10th consecutive singles victory.
UF's Diana Srebrovic, ranked No. 28, held a 6-3, 5-2 lead against 22nd-ranked Blakeley Griffith on the showcase court when play was abandoned. Revzina led Samantha Orlin 7-5, 5-2, while Frangulyan won the opening game of the third set against Zsofia Zubor when action halted.
