Gators Travel To California, Miami This Week
Tuesday, April 10, 2007 | Men's Track and Field
The University of Florida men's track and field team will return to action for a trio of meets this week as the Gators will compete at the Mt. SAC Relays, the Azusa Pacific Invitational and the Miami Elite Invitational.
Decathletes Kurt Lee (Spring Hill, Fla.) and Mike Morrison (Chesapeake, Va.) will take part in the decathlon portion of Mt. SAC Relays, which will be contested Wednesday and Thursday on the campus of Azusa Pacific. On Friday, senior Mike Morrison (Willingboro, N.J.) and junior Wes Stockbarger (Port Charlotte, Fla.) will compete in the Azusa Pacific Invitational before the rest of the Gator squad travels south for the Miami Elite Invitational on Saturday.
This weekend will mark the first decathlon for Lee and Morrison this season and will serve as their only opportunity to compete in all 10 decathlon events in a two-day span until the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships. Should either score at least 6,900 points they would provisionally qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The automatic mark is 7,500 points.
The older Morrison will compete in the long jump and 100m at Azusa Pacific, while Stockbarger will take part in the discus and shot put. The rest of the Gators will compete at Miami where UF has enjoyed success in each of the past two seasons.
The Gators are coming off a solid showing at the 63rd annual Pepsi Florida Relays in which UF collected 10 NCAA regional qualifying marks and claimed nine victories. Stockbarger led the way as he won the discus (57.04m/187-2) and was the top collegiate finisher in the shot put with the sixth-best mark in school history (18.34m/60-2).
Results for the Mt. SAC Relays decathlon and Azusa Pacific Invitational will be posted at www.apu.edu/athletics/ upon the conclusion of events each day. Results for the Miami Elite Invitational will be available at www.hurricanesports.cstv.com.
