Senior Nina Suvak won her 99th career singles match, leading the third-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team to a 6-1 victory over Ole Miss Wednesday morning the Ring Tennis Complex.
The match, which originally was scheduled to be played March 2nd until weather forced the postponement, resulted in the Gators' 39th consecutive home victory, as Florida improved to 18-1 overall and 9-1 in the Southeastern Conference and sits in a tie atop the league standings with Georgia with one match remaining.
Florida plays host to No. 23 South Carolina on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. in the regular-season finale for both teams. Georgia travels to No. 24 Tennessee to conclude its regular season.
On Wednesday, the Gators resumed the doubles matches already in progress from last month and easily captured the initial point of the dual match against Ole Miss (4-17, 0-10 SEC).
Freshman Csilla Borsanyi raced out and won the first 10 games against Nika Koukhartchouk before earning the 6-0, 6-2 victory on court No. 3 to give Florida a 2-0 lead.
Suvak, the lone senior on the Gator squad, then brought Florida within one win of the dual match after her 6-2, 6-2 victory over Soledad Podlipnik at the No. 4 position.
"I felt extremely tired out there today because it's been a very tough week of exams and classes, but I just tried by best to get off the court with a win as fast as possible," Suvak said. "My game is coming along and it feels good."
Junior Lolita Frangulyan provided the clinching dual match win with her 7-5, 3-0 decision against Carlin Cochran, who retired after the third game of the second set. Frangulyan rallied from a 5-3 deficit, down one break, before evening the score at 5-all after breaking Cochran, then winning eight of the next nine points to take the opening set.
Diana Srebrovic then posted an impressive 6-2, 6-4 win over red-hot Ilona Somers at the No. 1 position. The Gator junior held serve throughout the victory, holding the lone break in the third game of the second set and riding that to the win.
"I thought Diana looked really good during her match against Ilona Somers, who has won a lot of big matches recently. It was a quality win for Diana," Florida head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "Overall, today was a decent day. We could have played better at some positions, but we'll take the win."
