University of Florida junior Sandra Gal (Leichlingen, Germany) has been named Southeastern Conference Co-Player of the Week for her performance at last week's Bryan National Collegiate, the league announced Thursday.
Gal led the seventh-ranked Lady Gators to a runner-up finish at the Bryan National with a one-under 215, carding a final-round 69 to move from a tie for fifth to a share of first on the tournament's last day. Sunday's three-under 69, which equaled her career best, included four birdies, 13 pars and just one bogey.
Gal's 54-hole score of 215 forced a sudden-death playoff with Purdue's Maria Hernandez for the tournament's individual medal, which the latter won on the third extra hole. The Lady Gators' team leader with a 72.4 stroke average on the year, Gal was one of only five players to break 70 at the Bryan National, while she and Hernandez were the only pair to leave the event with a red number on the board.
In addition to her 69 on Sunday, Gal also posted an even-par 72 in the first round, giving her two rounds at par or better for the weekend. She has registered eight of UF's last 10 rounds at par or better, including five scores of 69 during the stretch.
The honor is Gal's fourth of both the 2006-07 campaign and her collegiate career. She picked up her third SEC Player of the Week Award of the season on March 29, just days after tying for third place at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. She garnered her second accolade of the season after winning the individual medal at the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational, and won her first following a six-over performance at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge.
Florida will return to action April 20, when it travels to West Point, Miss., for the SEC Championship. Mississippi State will host the 54-hole event at Old Waverly Golf Club, site of the 199 U.S. Women's Open. Scoring will be done live on the Internet at www.golfstat.com, and can also be accessed via www.gatorzone.com.
